How do you select your pair of socks each morning? One that matches your pants, right? Well that’s the rule of thumb that most men go by. Grey socks with grey pants and black socks with black pants, pretty straight and simple.
But, that’s just boring! Today, socks have evolved in so many ways that even at formal events professionals are seen going beyond the match-and-wear rule.
Bright colored socks and those with bold prints are currently in vogue. However, one has to be really careful while teaming up these socks with other clothing to complete your look.
When can you wear bright colored socks?
- When wearing a simple outfit
A bright and unique pair of sock will instantly make your simple outfit look interesting. Perfect for days when you decide to step out in your t-shirt/jeans or collared shirt/khakis.
2) When you want to try different colors
Show off your color coordination skills by complementing a pair of sock with a subtly matching outfit, preferably with sports jacket, pocket square, sweater or the pattern of jacket.
3) When you’re planning to remove your shoes
There are times when you have to remove your shoes, probably while going on a business trip or just because you want to relax. Of course the no-shoes occasions won’t always be planned but when they are show off your bright socks collection.
These are just three situations where you can flaunt your bright colored socks collection, however, there’s one time you should definitely wear them—when you feel like wearing it.
Before you set out to showcase your socks styling ideas, there are a few rules that you should know.
1) When unsure, go with the classics
Those who have always gone by the rule can start off with something less crazy. Stick to the classics like striped, paisley and argyle or look for socks that have no more than 3 colors.
“Match” and “coordinate” are not the same thing. It is not necessary that your socks have to match some piece of clothing. Instead of matching think of colors that can go well together, for example choose a color from your t-shirt pattern and select socks in the same shade to go with it.
3) Keep contrast levels in check
No matter what you wear be sure to keep your contrast levels in check. If you are wearing subtle or low-contrast color on the upper half of your body, wearing a bright eye popping color on the lower half is not a good idea. Make sure you maintain the contrast between your trousers and shoes just the way you do it for your shirt and jacket.
